James Caan was Coppola's first choice to play Colonel Lucas. Caan, however, wanted too much money for what was considered a minor part in the movie, and Harrison Ford was eventually cast in the role. Ironically, in between the time Ford shot his footage (1976) to the film's release date (1979), he had become a major star on his own, so even today, seeing an actor of considerable stature in such a minor role may be confusing to some viewers.
