In the story's initial scene, as Howard Prince (Woody Allen) is leaving his cash register duties to meet with his writer friend, Alfred Miller (Michael Murphy), the bartender makes a wager on the Basilio/Gavilan fight. The bout took place in 1953 and resulted in a 15-round decision for Gavilan which would have earned the bookie Prince $500.
