The possibility that Samara's father is an ocean demon was taken from Ringu (1998), and is an explanation provided by Heihachiro Ikuma (Richard Morgan's Japanese counterpart) who claimed that, athough they had sex before, Shizuko Yamamura only got pregnant after she spent time on a beach, and given her supernatural powers, her "true" father isn't even human. However, Shizuko also displayed some psychic powers of her own, implying that Sadako simply inherited her powers. This is only implied in this film (and only slightly elaborated on in the deleted scenes) and further explained in The Ring Two (2005).
