Mexico City plays a character in the movie. Much of the film takes place in Mexico City, and there's something very powerful about that foreign element, that loss of place." The danger of a big city like Mexico City is part of its allure. "Danny is at a place in his life where he is very confused. He's lost, and this is the kind of city where you get lost, and are never sure exactly where you're at."
