Reiko (Rachel's Japanese counterpart), after figuring out that she only survived the curse because she copied the tape and her son accidentally watched it, proceeds to have her son copy the tape so that she can show it to her own father instead to save her son's life. In order to keep Rachel sympathetic for the audience, the father character was adapted out and replaced with Chris Cooper's serial killer character that would be the recipient for the tape copy. Ultimately his scenes were cut from the film and it's never revealed who Rachel gives Aidan's copy of the tape to.
