Woody Strode was strongly considered for the role of Queequeg, but could not get away from the set of Cecil B. DeMille's I dieci comandamenti (1956). Although Strode had finished his brief scene as the King of Ethiopia, he finagled another role as a lode bearer for Moses' mother. This meant DeMille needed to keep him around for re-shoots until the end of production and, inadvertently, cost him a plum role in John Huston's movie.
