Originally, the roles eventually played by Leslie Jordan and Rusty Schwimmer were reversed. In the script, Shelby was a woman, while Joey B. was a man, as evidenced by the characters' names. However, once Jordan and Schwimmer had read for the roles separately and then as a duo, the producers decided to switch the characters' genders, therefore Jordan's character was originally the wife, while Schwimmer's was initially the husband.
