Director Chad Hartigan has stated in a recent interview that it was decided by Olivia Cooke, writer Mattson Tomlin and himself that they would not include a sex scene between Emma and Jude, as it felt more important to show the physicality of their love in other, less obvious ways. The outcome of the decision was the sensual split-screen scene between the two characters.
