Despite the unseen deleted scene where it had explained why the nuns were in the hospital morgue which was to identify the body of a priest, some fans have theorized that the crying floating nuns shown in the film symbolized that Madeline has damned herself to a fate worse than death after drinking Lisle's potion and then getting herself killed due to her carelessness and cruelty. Despite being legally dead, Madeline's soul is forever trapped inside of her decaying body and she'll never be able to properly pass on. It was even speculated that the nuns had possibly heard Madeline's screams in the morgue and were so shaken that they promptly left and cried. Furthermore, when Ernest finds Madeline in one of the body compartments, she tearfully tells him that she was screaming for someone to help her, and nobody came. This shows that there is no hope for her and, for that matter, Helen since their souls are practically trapped in decrepit shells forever.
