Alistair MacLean wrote his sequel to I cannoni di Navarone (1961) in 1968 when the original movie was fresher in people's minds. It would take another decade for the film adaptation to reach the screen, by which time interest in a sequel had considerably weakened. This might partly account for the film's less than stellar box office performance. (The film made $7 million at US cinemas, as opposed to the $29 million that the first film took.)
