Orson Welles wanted his first feature film to be an adaptation of "Heart of Darkness". In 1939, he presented RKO with his one hundred seventy-four page script for the film, but the studio turned it down, feeling it would be too expensive. They asked Welles for a more conventional script, so Welles gave them his script for Quarto potere (1941).
