Director John Carpenter was inspired by the relationships of other pairs of movie characters who got to know each other whilst on a journey in such films as Il club dei 39 (1935), La parete di fango (1958), and Accadde una notte (1934) for the developing relationship between the Starman (Jeff Bridges) and the Earth woman (Karen Allen).
