Christian Bale, who played John Connor in the previous movie Terminator Salvation (2009), was offered to return, but he declined and was replaced by Jason Clarke. The movie was then re-written as a reboot, and meant as the first installment of a new trilogy (and possibly a TV series) that never came to fruition. In a 2020 podcast, screenwriter Patrick Lussier revealed that the two canceled sequels were planned for a 2017 and 2018 release, and would have branched off further from the original timeline and answer all the questions raised in Genisys. A script and outline were already written for the second and third movie respectively, with Clarke stating that the second would have focused on John Connor's transformation into the T-3000 after being attacked by the T-5000 called Alex (Matt Smith), which is the personification of Skynet. Lussier added that this Alex-Skynet would be revealed to be from an alternate timeline, and had jumped back to several other timelines to change them in its favor (hence his comment to John that he has "come a very long way to stop you"). It specifically grabbed John Connor, realizing that it needs humanity's strongest weapon, John, to defeat them. Danny Dyson (Dayo Okeniyi) and detective O'Brien (J.K. Simmons) would return, and the backstory of the 'Pops' T-800 and the T-1000 would also have been addressed. Lussier mentioned that he considers releasing the unfilmed stories as comics instead, which is what happened with the canceled sequels to Salvation as well.
