Joe has many parallels to Steve Jobs who helped establish Pixar as a studio, and was super involved while he was alive. Joe wears a Black turtleneck and jeans for most of the movie (much like Steve Jobs dressing style). People tell Joe in the movie that he should reach out to Lisa again and he brushes them off saying it's not the right time, precisely as Steve Jobs did with his first daughter, Lisa. The astral ship plays Bob Dylan (Steve Jobs was obsessed with Dylan) as it moves over the land.
