Actress Daisy Ridley revealed in a September 2020 interview that several plans concerning Rey's parentage were considered and scrapped throughout the production of the sequel trilogy, including Rey being related to Obi-Wan Kenobi. The idea of Rey being Emperor Palpatine's granddaughter was pitched to her by writer/director J.J. Abrams right before starting to film Episode IX, and even then it was apparently still open to change.
