An additional way in which Prince John is portrayed as infantile in this film is the fact that the animators did not give Prince John a lion's mane unlike King Richard who is shown to have a big mane. This is a subtle artistic device to suggest that Prince John is still a child and weak. Interestingly, the purpose of a lion's mane is to protect a male lion's neck and throat during territorial fights. This also ties in with the ending of this film when King Richard has returned home to England and taken his throne back from Prince John in that King Richard is the dominant alpha male lion in the kingdom.
