Major Mallory (Robert Shaw) has the mission to kill Nicolai, a character from I cannoni di Navarone (1961) who was played by Tutte Lemkow. In this movie, Nicolai goes by Lescovar, pretending to be an American and British ally, and is played by Franco Nero. The character, to hide his identity, obviously had to get a "new face," which makes sense since character-actor Tutte Lemkow and the very leading man type, Franco Nero, look absolutely nothing alike.
