The 1906 earthquake hit at 5:12am on Wednesday, 18 April. It's actually rare that a Hollywood film was accurate, probably because there were so many still alive who remembered it in 1932. There was a very strong foreshock (knocked down her father), and then about 20 seconds later, the real quake hit (buried him). Shaking was over quickly -42 seconds -but have been estimated that it would have reached a 7.9 on the Richter scale. Over 3,000 died and 80% of the city burned in the resulting fires.
