The comic-book character of Poison Ivy (used in this film) was reportedly inspired by the Gothic short story "Rappaccini's Daughter" (1844) by Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864). The story's eponymous character is Beatrice Rappaccini, an Italian woman who has spend most of her life tending to a garden full of poisonous plants. She has gained immunity to poisons, but her own touch has become poisonous to all other humans and animals. A professor offers to "cure" her of her special powers, but his cure is lethal and he mocks her dying moments.
