If Vince really had been giving away free stuff, as shown in the movie, it makes his ringing speed even more impressive, as items not scanned through the register do not count toward a cashier's items per minute. Also, it is interesting how the store disqualifies employees over a customer complaint, but not for grand theft, which would have been easy to prove with store videos, fingerprinting, and records checking.
