Unlike in the film, the real King John was not arrested by his brother Richard, but rather he died of dysentery in 1216 after spending many years travelling the country, putting down rebellions in his war with the barons of England. He did, however, lose a significant amount of gold and the crown jewels shortly before his death, as the baggage coaches travelling with him were washed into the swamp and quicksand of The Wash, which is the estuary bay at the north-west corner of East Anglia on the East coast.
