The "Catholic Legion of Decency" deemed it would be a "sin" to view "Lolita". This fact (coupled with the Hays Production Code) held up the release of the film for several months while Stanley Kubrick re-edited it. Years later (in a "Newsweek" article), Kubrick said he "probably wouldn't have made the film" had he realized in advance how difficult the censorship problems would be.
