At the junkyard, the end of the driveway is marked with a 10-inch black sphere with a flame on top. This is a "highway torch" or "smudge pot". It contains kerosene and has a wick at the top that is protected by a small cage. They were used to mark road hazards at night, and have been replaced in modern times by flashing lights (battery-powered) and reflective barricades and barrels.
