According to TCM's Eddie Muller, Michael Curtiz had wanted to cast Orson Welles in the role of Victor Grandison and Joan Fontaine as Matilda Frazier, but Welles was too busy wrapping up production on La signora di Shanghai (1947), and Curtiz's budget simply could not afford Fontaine.
