Because they were both set during the winter, DVD releases of both Orphan and another film released in 2009, a fantasy drama titled The Lovely Bones, were bizarrely marketed at Atlantic Canadian Wal-Mart retail locations as Christmas films, with one Wal-Mart in New Brunswick's capital city of Fredericton even going so far as to categorize the two films as family features. Two other films released to DVD the year prior, Marley & Me and Phoebe in Wonderland, had been mistakenly categorized in these locations as family comedies, but Orphan was the only one of the four films to have large posters put up in the Wal-Mart directly next to the family films. DVDs in Canadian Wal-Mart chains are now typically just placed in catch-all plastic barrels that can be dug through at the customer's leisure, with no genre categorization.
