In the final scene where Ferdinando Esposito (Totò) is accompained to jail by policeman Lorenzo Bottoni (Aldo Fabrizi) they hear a melodic sound coming from a nearby inn and wonder what song it is. Actually, this is a song from Totò's revue show Quando meno te l'aspetti (1940), performed by Anna Magnani. Magnani was originally considered for the role of Bottoni's wife Giovanna under direction of Luigi Zampa, who wanted Peppino De Filippo in the role of the cop. Writer Pietro Tellini had originally considered her for the role of the robber.
