Joy Ride is known for having many alternate scenes, endings and versions of the movie which were filmed during two years while film was in production, but even the original script by J.J. Abrams and Clay Tarver from 1998 titled Squelch had a ending which was completely different than any of those which were filmed. In the script, after Rusty Nail fakes his suicide just like in original ending of the film, Charlotte is found dead and Venna blames Lewis and Fuller for what happened. Some time later after they return back home, Rusty shows up at Venna's house and kidnaps her while she's showering, and wounds Lewis who arrived there to talk with her. In the meantime police has informed Fuller that Rusty is still alive so he drives to Venna's house and sees what happened and chases after Rusty's truck, and crashes into it to stop him, but is severely injured in the crash. Venna manages to escape out of the truck's trailer full of old metal garbage and bodies of Rusty's other victims. She hits Rusty in the head and after he chases her through the streets on foot, wounded Lewis takes Rusty's truck and drives it into him, crashing them both into a radio shack and killing Rusty. In the last scenes of the script, Rusty's fingers and jaw are cut off by coroner and he is being buried while Lewis, Fuller and Venna watch.
