When Joe avoids a pile of spilled nails in front of a hardware store, there is a poster advertising "9-inch Nails" in the store's window. This is a reference to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who cowrote the score for Soul; Reznor was the creator and (until Ross joined nearly 30 years after the group's inception) the sole member of the American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails.
