Over the years, as film became a legitimate art form that was endlessly analyzed, codified, and innovated upon, the importance of the musical soundtrack also became both recognized and improved on. Bernard Herrmann's score for this film was not only his last, but is one of the textbook examples of a film score not as mere background, but as a major, integral character in the film.
