Damon Gameau (who plays 'The Follower'), was a recent NIDA graduate, and had performed in Peter Shaffer's 'Equus' on stage in Adelaide, South Australia where Vertigo Productions resided. Gameau came highly recommended to director Rolf de Heer by a local casting director. De Heer said: "He was back in Sydney and we were in Adelaide, so I rang him and said 'I'm interested in you for a role' and asked him to find a mate with a video camera and to just talk to me." Gameau sent a tape and was cast as "The Follower'.
