When Lieutenant Ilia comes aboard the bridge and states "My oath of celibacy is on record, Captain", the film's novelization explains that Deltans release intensely high levels of pheromones. A scene following this deleted from the movie but in the novelization has Commander Sulu not fully stand in order to not make his arousal obvious.
