Though veteran cinematographer Owen Roizman (Il braccio violento della legge (1971), Quinto potere (1976)) is credited as the sole cinematographer of this film (and, furthermore, was the sole cinematographer nominated for the Academy Award for the film), William Friedkin has revealed that, owing to international relations with the British, Billy Williams, who shot Donne in amore (1969) for Ken Russell, was actually the cinematographer who traveled to Mosul to shoot the opening Iraq prologue sequence of this film.
