The published casualties of the battle of Rorke's Drift were 351 Zulu fatalities, with 17 British killed and 10 wounded. According to surviving members of the British force, this was woefully underreported. This was possibly due to the overt distain that a senior officer had for Chard and Bromhead. Other participants in the battle said that the number of Zulu dead was closer to 800.
