The movie cheats by showing Susie get away from George Harvey; but then revealing she was raped and murdered. This getaway wound up being an "Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge" type fantasy and denial scene. Apparently both Jackson and Tucci objected to showing this (murder and rape) scene, although we do get flashes of it at the end. Alice Sebold objected to the assault being cut from the narrative.
