Mushu's name is inspired by the 'mushussu' ("Mush·khush·shu"), or 'reddish serpent' creature of Babylonian mythology. A sacred animal belonging to the god Marduk and his son Nabu, 'mushussu' was known as a scaly animal with hind legs resembling the talons of an eagle, lion-like forelimbs, a long neck and tail, a horned head, a snake-like tongue, and a crest. It most famously appears on the reconstructed Ishtar Gate in the city of Babylon, dating to the 6th century BCE.
