Originally, Dino De Laurentiis meant only to produce and finance the film, but upon seeing it, decided that no other studio would touch it, and turned his company into a distribution company as well. One of their other films in 1986 was Manhunter - Frammenti di un omicidio (1986), the first film to feature Hannibal Lecter. Il silenzio degli innocenti (1991) featured Chris Isaak from Fuoco cammina con me (1992), and Anthony Hopkins, who was cast because of his performance in Lynch's other film The Elephant Man (1980).
