Both Cher and Meryl Streep received Oscar nominations for this film though nominated in separate categories (Supporting/Leading Actress). In 1988 they were nominated again, this time in the same category for Best Leading Actress (for "Moonstruck" & "Ironweed"). When Cher won the award, Streep was the first to leap to her feet in gleeful applause as the audience gave her a standing ovation. In her acceptance speech, Cher singled out "Mary Louise Streep" for thanks.
