Rumors about the sexuality of Henry III date back to the late 1500s, and contemporary scholars of French history still are undecided as to whether such rumors were true or merely were drummed up by his political opponents to slander him. In the French story, he is portrayed by Maxfield Stanley as effete and childish, attributes that would have signaled homosexuality to 1916 audiences.
