The film was originally developed at Columbia Pictures. However, studio boss Mark Canton objected to making the film in black and white. Tim Burton walked off with the project, shopping it around various other studios such as 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros., until The Walt Disney Company picked it up under its Touchstone Pictures banner (while granting Burton creative control).
