Johnny Depp claimed to feel "some kind of inherent connection" to Dillinger, and saw him as a "charismatic" and uncompromising "man of the people" who was "that era's rock and roll star." Depp's deep connection to Dillinger came from personal similarities in their lives. One of Depp's grandfathers was a moonshine runner, Depp's stepfather was incarcerated for burglary and robbery in the same prison Dillinger helped his men escape from, and Dillinger was "raised basically a farm boy" in Southern Indiana about 70 miles away from where Depp was born and raised in Kentucky.
