The first 2-D animated Disney film for composer Randy Newman, who previously scored the Disney/Pixar films Toy Story - Il mondo dei giocattoli (1995), A Bug's Life - Megaminimondo (1998), Toy Story 2 - Woody & Buzz alla riscossa (1999), Monsters & Co. (2001), and Cars - Motori ruggenti (2006). This was the second hand-drawn animated film he worked on, the first being Cats Don't Dance (1997). Alan Menken and his new lyricist, Glenn Slater, were originally going to do the music for the film, but John Lasseter didn't want the public to feel that Disney was becoming repetitive because Menken had been scoring another fairy tale film, Come d'incanto (2007).
