John Wayne's last day of work on this film was 8/31/64. This was 24 days ahead of the stop-date specified in his contract, and allowed him to get a medical check-up immediately afterward, rather than at the end of the following month. The check-up confirmed that he had cancer, and he underwent extensive surgery, which saved his life. Had director Otto Preminger not been such a fast worker, it is possible that this film could have been Wayne's last.
