Director Joel Schumacher first realized that George Clooney would make a good Batman after seeing him in the film Dal tramonto all'alba (1996) and drawing the famous cowl over Clooney's face in a newspaper advertisement for it. (This fact was unbeknownst to film critic Roger Ebert, who stated his theory on Siskel & Ebert & the Movies (1986) and also wrote in his negative review of this film: "I've always suspected that they cast movie Batmans by their chins, which is all you can see when the costume is being worn and Clooney has the best chin yet" referring to what he saw as lack of development of Batman as an interesting character in any of the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher films.)
