On their uniform's right shoulder, soldiers wear the patch of their most recent or most significant combat command. Sgt. Holt's is of the Third Army, famously commanded by General George S. Patton in WWII. Sgt. Ryan wears the patch of the Eighth Army. By the medal ribbons on their chests, both served in WWII, and both wear the Combat Infantry Badge, which is also the device at the top of the opening credits.
