Klaatu says that he traveled for about five months, covering a distance of about 250 million miles, which works out to a speed of about 68,000 miles an hour. The fastest man has gone was during the Apollo 10 moon flight in May of 1969, with a maximum speed of 39.900 mph. The writers clearly did not understand the capabilities of modern science. The Apollo 10 mission took place only 18 years after this film and we could already travel at 58% of the speed of this super advanced alien collective.
