Zulu soldiers were well-motivated and ruled with an iron fist. Many of them were former opponents who had been captured and forced into service. If any man were to show reluctance or hesitation, once a battle was over he would be executed. If a group of soldiers fought well but were defeated, even through no fault of their own, their possessions would be seized and distributed, and their wives and children would be beaten to death. Once the defeated warriors returned, their heads were bashed in. As a result of this, these warriors were rarely defeated but rather annihilated, and they never ran away.
