Robert De Niro, having just broken out with Il padrino - Parte II (1974), was being offered five hundred thousand dollars to star in other films, but did this for thirty-five thousand dollars. Paul Schrader agreed to take about the same amount for his screenplay, despite having just sold another one (Yakuza (1974)) for ten times that amount. The rest of the main cast and Martin Scorsese also worked for less than normal. Cybill Shepherd took thirty-five thousand dollars; and Scorsese made sixty-five thousand dollars. The total budget was around 1.8 million dollars, of which, less than two hundred thousand dollars went to talent salaries.
