When Robert Frobisher talks to Vyvyan Ayrs in 1936 about Jocasta's former relationship with the German composer Kesselring, Vyvyan states that Jocasta couldn't be with Kesselring because she was a Jew. Robert asks why not. Vyvyan replies, "Can you really be so ignorant of what's happening in Germany?" Vyvyan refers to the rise of Nazi Germany, which existed from 1933 to 1945, and which was anti-Semitic.
