In the book, Yossarian suffers a groin injury and is unable to figure out, before passing out from the pain, if he has lost his genitalia to shrapnel. In the movie, Yossarian is hospitalized after a similar injury to his upper thigh; while the dialogue doesn't reference his possible castration, there is a visual gag sitting on Yossarian's bedside table -- two oranges placed together next to a peeled open can of cocktail nuts, with only half the word "cocktail" in frame.
