Director Frank Oz and Ian McDiarmid had previously been in Il ritorno dello Jedi (1983). They subsequently worked together in all three Star Wars prequels, during which McDiarmid was digitally inserted into L'Impero colpisce ancora (1980), in which Oz had already appeared.
